2019 International Studies Association Conference
As part of the research program, presented a paper entitled, ‘When is Genocide a Genocide: An Examination of Four Genocidal Debates and the Misidentification of Genocide.’ The paper was presented at the 2019 International Studies Association Conference 28 March 2019 in Toronto, Canada. The paper focused on the politicization of the word “genocide” and how and when states recognize and intervene in an ongoing genocide.
Frontiers in Prevention II Conference
As part of the research program, Center staff attended the conference Frontiers in Prevention Conference II in Binghmaton, NY 5-6 April 2019. The conference explored the nexus between the academic side of research and the practice of genocide prevention. Dr. Christi Yoder presented on “Recognizing Indicators of Intent in Real Time: The Problem of Intent” , Kristopher Haugh presented on “Genocide Prevention: A Pracademic Endeavor”, and Marcus Steiner presented on “Across Time and Borders: Persistence and Quantification of Genocide Risk Factors.”
Women’s Resilience During Genocide Film Festival
As part of the education program, the Center screened films highlighting women’s resilience during genocide. The films viewed were:

The selected movies highlighted women’s perspectives from the Holocaust, Bosnia, and Rwanda. Afterwards, Arthur Gilbert, a genocide scholar, led a discussion on the films and the topic of preventing genocide in today’s world.
2018 International Studies Association Conference
As part of the research program, the Center presented a paper entitled ‘Forced marriage and marital rape: An examination of sexual violence and genocide in the Khmer Rouge and ISIS.’ The paper was presented 6 April at the 2018 International Studies Association Conference in San Francisco. Such research enables us to look at the causal factors of various types of violence during genocide.
2017 International Studies Association Conference
As part of the research program, the Center presented a paper entitled ‘Rape, genocide, and forced marriage in Cambodia: Marital vows and sexual assault under the Khmer Rouge. It was presented at the 2017 International Studies Association Conference in Baltimore, Maryland on 24 February 2017. The paper focused on the phenomenon of forced marriage under the Khmer Rouge and in international law.
