Statement on the Rohingya

CGRE calls upon the international community to fully address the genocide of the Rohingya people being perpetrated by the Burmese government in Rakhine State in Myanmar. Since the 1978 crackdown committed under Ne Win’s military junta, the Burmese government and its Tatmadaw military arm have carried out a 40-year campaign of human rights abuses, ethnic cleansing, and genocide against the Rohingya.

The Burmese government’s current abuses of the Rohingya include but are not limited to:

  • The forced relocation of over 700,000 Rohingya

  • The large-scale murder and rape of Rohingya civilians

  • The destruction of Rohingya communities

  • The arbitrary incarceration of Rohingya

CGRE calls upon the United States government to acknowledge the Burmese treatment of the Rohingya as a genocide. CGRE calls upon the Burmese government to acknowledge the abuses it has perpetrated against the Rohingya and to allow an independent investigation into the abuses. As a start towards rectifying the abuses of the Rohingya, CGRE calls on Burmese State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi to step down and for the following Tatmadaw officials to submit themselves to the International Criminal Court:

  • Min Aung Hlaing

  • Soe Win

  • Aung Kyaw Zaw

  • Maung Maung Soe

  • Aung Aung

  • Than Oo
